In this post, I will be showing you how to do part A, and questions 4 and 5. I will be using a ratio table for both of them. Remember that what you do to one side, you have to do to the other side.

Part A

1) 245% of $356.80

245% of 365.80 is 874.16

2) 68 3/4% of 730

Here we have to convert the fraction into a decimal.

68 3/4% of 730 is 501.875

3) 360% of $129.95

360% of 129.95 is 467.82

Part B

Since these are word problems, you have to have a simple sentence answer at the end.

5) The 4900 seat hockey arena was 63% full. How many people were at the game?

6) The Nile River is about 209% the length of the Yukon River. If the Yukon River is 3168 km, how long is the Nile river to the Nearest km? Show your work.

To add fractions:

First find the common denominator (one way of doing this is by multiplying the denominators).

Second, convert the fractions so it's over that common denominator (ie. if the common denominator is 6, and you have 1/2, make it so they're equivalent).

Third, add normally? (well not normally, but like 2/5 + 3/5 = 5/5. That type of stuff)

To subtract fractions:

Pretty much the same as adding fractions but you subtract.

To multiply fractions:

Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators. If you have a mixed number, convert it to improper fractions and multiply. If your answer is an improper fraction, convert to mixed number.

To divide fractions:

If you don't want to use pictures (well I dont) then you can use a T-chart or a sideways thing (like a t-chart except flipped). What you have to do is if you have something like 1/2 divided by 1/3, 1/2 goes on the left side of the T-chart or the top part of the sideways thing and 1/3 goes on the right or the bottom. On the T-chart, you have to make the right side equal 1 then do the same thing you did (no adding or subtracting) to the left side. On the sideways thing, you have to multiply the bottom by its reciprical (is that spelt right?) and multiply the top by the bottom's reciprical too. If your answer is an improper fraction, convert to mixed number.

-You can get the common denominator by listing some multiples and seeing which one they have in common. Or you can multiply the denominators together.

-When subtracting fractions you do the same thing wih the adding but after you find the common denominator you subtract.

Adding Fractions

Question 1: 1 3/4 + 1 1/8= 2 7/8
First off you have add up the whole numbers. So we add 1 to 1 and we get 2 (1+1=2).
Second you have to find the common denominator. So we multiply 4 to 8 and we get 32. (4x8=32). Since the half of 32 is 16, we find out if 4 can go into 16 and if 8 can go into 16.
So first we list the multiples of 4 and 8 (4=4,8,10,12,14,16,20)(8=8,16)(the common factor is 16. So we found out that there was and it was 16.So we put the 16 as a denominator.

Question 2: 2 4/5 + 1 1/2 = 4 3/10
i made denominator because 2x5 is 10.Then I made the numerator 8 because 5 fits into 10, 2 times. Then I made the other numerator 5 because 2 fits into 10, 5 times.I knew that 8=5 would make 13 and 13/10 is an improper fraction so i divided 13 to 10. 13 divided by 10 equals 1 and 3/10. i know there is 3 more wholes so i add 3 to 1 and 3/10 which made 4 and 3/10.

3) put the sum/difference on the other side of the equal sign
4) if the denominators aren't the same, you need to find the LCD (Least Common Denominator)
- find the multiples for each denominator until you get a number that both denominators have
5) for both sides of the equal sign, do this: (LCD/D)N=NN
- Least Common Denominator divided by Denominator times Numerator equals New Numerator

6) add/subtract the fractions
7) if the sum/difference is an improper fraction, convert it into a mixed number
- divide the numerator by the denominator (subtraction doesn't always work)
- instead of having a remainder, that number will be the numerator
- rewrite your mixed fraction
8) now just add this sum/difference to your whole number on the other side of the equal sign
9) simplify if nessessary
10) there's your answer

Adding Fractions

In order to add fractions, you first need to have a common denominator. You can get the common denominator by listing some multiples and seeing which one they have in common. Or you can multiply the denominators together.

Once you have the same denominators, all you have to do is add the numerators.
Here is my example:

Remember that whatever you do to the bottom, you must do to the top.

Adding Mixed Fractions
It's the same as adding fractions. You must have the same denominators.

Subtracting Fractions
To subtract fractions, you (once again) must have the same denominator. Once you have that, just subtract the numerators.

Multiplying Fractions
When you multiply fractions, you multiply the numerators, then multiply the denominators.

Multiplying Mixed Fractions
To multiply mixed fractions, change the mixed fraction to an improper fraction, then multiply the numerators and denominators.

Dividing Fractions
There are a few ways you can divide fractions. The first is by using a ratio table.

This time, I will also show you how to solve it using a reciprocal. It is the inverse of the denominator.

1) 4 1/4 + 5 9/10

One week, Kristi worked 3 days at a department store for31/2 h each day. She was paid $9/h.

a) How many hours did Kristi work that week? Show your thinking.

b) How much did Kristi earn that week.

Jupiter completes about TWO2/5 rotation every 24 hours (an Earth day). How many rotation does Jupiter complete in one Earth week? Show your thinking.

A sailboat is sailing at 81/2 km/h. If the weather conditions and the current do not change, how far will the sailboat travel in 11/3h? Show your thinking.

Today in class, Multiplications of Fractions. I will solve 2 of the problems from our homework.
1.)

We want 4/5 of 1/2, so we divide 1/2 into 5 equal parts and then take 4 of those equal parts. How many small equal parts from the square been divided? Yes 10 and 4 of these are shaded twice. Thus: 4/5 x 1/2 = 4/10 To write this in the simplest form, we will have 2/5.

Using the same example:

4/5 x 1/2 = 4x1/5x2

= 4/10

The answer is 4/10 and we need to write this in the simplest form. To do this we are going to divide both the numerator and the denominator by the least common factor which is 2.

4/10 ÷ 2/2

the next example is

2.)

Let's divide 2/3 of the square into 7 equal parts and then take 6 of these equal parts

How many small equal parts been divided?21

and how many small squares have been shaded twice? 12

therefore 6/7 x 2/3=12/21 or 4/7

There is another way to multiply fractions and that is by canceling

example:

6/7 x 2/3=?

We can divide the numerator and the denominator by the factors.

For example 6 and 3,we can divide each of them by 3.

1) 1 3/4 + 1 1/8 - First step is to add the whole numbers , so 1 + 1 = 2. - Second step is to find the common denominator, Then we multiply 4 x 8 < x8 =" 32"> 32 is the same as saying 16 so we have 2 ?/16 2 12 /16 + 2 1/16 = 2 14/16 = s 7/8 1 3/4 + 1 1/8

2) 2 4/5 + 1 1/2 = 3
8/10 + 5/10 = 13/10 = 3 13/10 Three thirteen tenths .

Today in class, we went over the homework (c-41, c-42). Today's homework was to do c-42 correctly (most people in class didn't estimate).

Here are some examples from c-42:

(I)

Since we're estimating, this would become 2 + 3 + 0 =5 . 1 3/4 rounds to 2, 3 3/16, and 1/9 round to 0.

(S)

3 7/10 rounds to 4, 4 1/15 = 4, and 2 2/13= 2. Making this 4+4+2 = 10

(D) Diane went salmon fishing with her father. Diane caught one that weighed 16 3/8 lb. Her father caught one that weighed 10 1/16 lb. About how much heavier was Diane's fish?simple sentence answer: Diane's fish was about 6 lb heavier.

We round 16 3/8 to 16, then subtract (since we're trying to find the difference) 10(10 1/16). 16 - 10 = 6

(T) 11 6/7 + (13 1/5 - 3 1/11)

First, do the work that is in the brackets: 13 1/5 rounds to 13, and 3 1/11 = 3

13 - 3 = 10

11 6/7 = 12

12 + 10 = 22

We also discussed an easier way to find the LCD of fractions like this:

3 7/10 + 4 1/15 + 2 2/13

You can multiply all the denominators together ( in this case you get 1950), or you can find the prime factors of the denominators.

Now we get rid of any doubles, that is why one of the 5s are crossed out. Now if you multiply them all together, it will equal 390, their common denominator. But it doesn't ALWAYS work. If you have time, Mr. Harbeck told us to search prime factors and LCDs.

Hello everyone. I'll just be showing you 5 examples from our homework. And Simran will show you another 5 on her post. My 5 questions are on the first page/pg. C-41.

I'll be doing A and B from the top row, M and O from the bottom row, and word problem P.

First of all, you need to remember the steps for adding fractions, with different denominators.

*If subtraction, use the same steps, but subtract instead of add (step 4)*

1) write down the question

2) write down the multiples for each denominator, until you find a number that both denominators have AKA LCD (Least Common Denominator)

3) for both sides of the plus sign, do this: (LCD/D)N=NN (Least Common Denominator divided by Denominator, times Numerator, equals New Numerator)

4) add the fractions

I'm sorry if it's hard to understand, but I hope these pictures help. If not, ask Mr.Harbeck (:

For Question M, you'll notice that there are brackets. Don't be afraid. Just do the inside of the brackets first (using the steps above), then just repeat what I've already shown you above.

RELAX! You just need to convert/change that improper fraction into a mixed number. Hmmm... how do you do that? Well here's your answer. (shown below)

1) divide the numerator by the denominator

*subtraction doesn't always work*

2) instead of having a remainder, that number will be the numerator

3) rewrite your mixed fraction

Now you've solved inside the brackets. Now do the rest.

*When dealing with mixed numbers, just bring them down, then add/subtract*

Okay, now here is question O. There are 3 fractions to add, but there are no brackets. So this means we aren't doing the same thing we did for question M.

Now here is the last question I'll show you. It's word problem P.

A BigBurger has 1/4 pound of meat. A SuperBurger has 1/3 pound of meat. How much more meat was used for the SuperBurger? ___ lb.

*When solving word problems, always remember the unit (lb.) and a simple sentence.*

The SuperBurger used 1/12 lb. more meat than the BigBurger.

There, 5 questions from our homework. There are 37 questions you need to do. I've already given away 5, so tomorrow everyone should have at least 5 done. *wink wink*

Today in class we did the following: correct yesterday's homework, and subtracting mixed numbers. We are also reminded that the student led. portfolios are due. on Monday. Then we had homework (sheet Mr. Harbeck gave us).

Yesterday's homework: Question 1

There are two ways that you could subtract mixed numbers. This is the first way. First, we are going to change the mixed number to an improper fraction. To do that, the denominator stays the same as long as it's the common denominator. To find the numerator, you multiply the denominator (4) by the mixed whole number (36). After, you add the numerator (144+1). Do the same for 2 3/4. Then, you could subtract. After subtracting, you have to change the improper fraction (answer) to a mixed number. To do that, you divide. So it's 134 divided by 4. Which gives you the answer of 33 2/4 or 33 1/2.

The second way for subtracting mixed numbers is to borrow. You use this if the wholes are big, and when you don't want to multiply (if the number's too big for you). To use this, you write the mixed number a different way, but still having the same amount (eg. 36= 35 4/4). Add the whole with the fraction (35 4/4 + 1/4). Then, you could subtract. Which gives you the answer (33 2/4 or 33/ 1/2).

This is another question using way 2: borrowing.

Don't forget to do your homework (worksheet). And if you're not done your eportfolios, finish it . One more thing, the 2 minutes storyboard and script are also due on Monday.
