Today in class we did the following: correct yesterday's homework, and subtracting mixed numbers. We are also reminded that the student led. portfolios are due. on Monday. Then we had homework (sheet Mr. Harbeck gave us).

Yesterday's homework: Question 1


There are two ways that you could subtract mixed numbers. This is the first way. First, we are going to change the mixed number to an improper fraction. To do that, the denominator stays the same as long as it's the common denominator. To find the numerator, you multiply the denominator (4) by the mixed whole number (36). After, you add the numerator (144+1). Do the same for 2 3/4. Then, you could subtract. After subtracting, you have to change the improper fraction (answer) to a mixed number. To do that, you divide. So it's 134 divided by 4. Which gives you the answer of 33 2/4 or 33 1/2.


The second way for subtracting mixed numbers is to borrow. You use this if the wholes are big, and when you don't want to multiply (if the number's too big for you). To use this, you write the mixed number a different way, but still having the same amount (eg. 36= 35 4/4). Add the whole with the fraction (35 4/4 + 1/4). Then, you could subtract. Which gives you the answer (33 2/4 or 33/ 1/2).

This is another question using way 2: borrowing.

Don't forget to do your homework (worksheet). And if you're not done your eportfolios, finish it . One more thing, the 2 minutes storyboard and script are also due on Monday.

Today in class we went over our homework, the 4 adding fracion questions and the 3 word problems. Here are the correct answers:



1) She can make the cake whole again.


5/8 + 1/2=9/8 or 1 1/8


5/8 + 1/2 change to 4/8= 9/8 or 1 1/8













2) 1/2 fraction of a package of buns is needed for the hotdogs.

12/8 = 1 4/8 = 1/2




















3) She has 1 7/20 L of punch.


3/5+1/2= 1 1/10


1 1/10+1/4=1 7/20


















We also added a few mixed numbers.

















For homework we got subtraction questions.

Subtracting fractions is just like adding fractions, you change the whole but instead of adding you subtract.

Here are the rest of the homework questions.

Adding and subtracting mixed numbers:


1) 1 1/2 + 1 3/4

= 3/2 + 7/4

= 12/8 + 14/8

= 26/8 = 13/4 = 3 1/4

2) 7 1/6 + 15 7/9

= 43/6 + 142/9

= 387/54 + 852/54

= 1239/54 = 23 3/54

3) (7/8 - 1/4) + 1/2

= (28/32 - 8/32) + 1/2

= 20/32 = 5/8 + 1/2

= 10/16 + 8/16

= 18/16 = 9/8

4) 5/6 - 4/9

= 45/54 - 24/54

= 21/54

= 7/18

Skills Work - Adding Mixed Numbers

Hello. I'm here to show you how to add mixed numbers.
Here are 10 easy steps on how to do it. Although, some steps aren't nessessary, depending on what kind of question you're dealing with.

1) write down the question
2) add the whole numbers
3) put the sum on the other side of the equal sign
4) if the denominators aren't the same, you need to find the LCD (Least Common Denominator)
- find the multiples for each denominator until you get a number that both denominators have
5) for both sides of the equal sign, do this: (LCD/D)N=NN
- Least Common Denominator divided by Denominator times Numerator equals New Numerator
6) add the fractions
7) if the sum is an improper fraction, convert it into a mixed number
- divide the numerator by the denominator (subtraction doesn't always work)
- instead of having a remainder, that number will be the numerator
- rewrite your mixed fraction
8) now just add this sum to your whole number on the other side of the equal sign
9) simplify if nessessary
10) there's your answer

*simplifying basically means to make the pieces of the whole smaller*

Reminders:
- if the question you're answering, is a word problem, don't forget the simple sentence
- if there's a unit, don't forget it in your simple sentence
- if there are brackets in the question, do them first before you do the outside
- subtraction uses the same steps, but instead of adding, it's subtracting
- if you're adding more than 2 fractions, use the same steps, and make sure you find the LCD for all of the fractions

Today in Skills, Mr Harbeck told us to answer these two questions:
1 3/4 + 1 1/8 =

2 4/5 + 1 1/2 =

And we were told to explain how to add the mixed numbers.
Here is the first question:

1 3/4 + 1 1/8=

1 12/16 + 1 2/16 = 2 7/8
So what I did was that I added the whole numbers first and it was 2. Then I made the denominator 16 instead of 32 because it would save me some time. I knew 3 quarters of 16 were 12 and 1 eighth of 16 was 2. Then after, you just add the fractions and it would be 14. But since 14 and 16 were equal, i divided it by 2. So the fractions is 7 over 8.

2 4/5 + 1 1/2 = 4 3/10
So what I was was that I made the denominator 10 because 5x2=10. Then I made the numerator 8 because 5 fits into 10, 2 times. Then I made the other numerator 5 because 2 fits into 10, 5 times. I knew if you added 5+8 it would make an improper fraction. So I made another whole number. Then I added all the whole numbers up and it became 4 3/10.

That is how you add mixed fractions. Thank you.

Adding Mixed Numbers

Question 1: 1 3/4 + 1 1/8= 2 7/8
First off you have add up the whole numbers. So we add 1 to 1 and we get 2 (1+1=2).
Second you have to find the common denominator. So we multiply 4 to 8 and we get 32. (4x8=32). Since the half of 32 is 16, we find out if 4 can go into 16 and if 8 can go into 16.
So first we list the multiples of 4 and 8 (4=4,8,10,12,14,16,20)(8=8,16)(the common factor is 16. So we found out that there was and it was 16.So we put the 16 as a denominator.I knew 3 quarters of 16 were 12 and 1 eighth of 16 was 2. Then after, you just add the fractions and it would be 14. But since 14 and 16 were equal, i divided it by 2. So the fractions is 7 over 8.

Question 2: 2 4/5 + 1 1/2 = 4 3/10
i made denominator because 2x5 is 10.Then I made the numerator 8 because 5 fits into 10, 2 times. Then I made the other numerator 5 because 2 fits into 10, 5 times.I knew that 8=5 would make 13 and 13/10 is an improper fraction so i divided 13 to 10. 13 divided by 10 equals 1 and 3/10. i know there is 3 more wholes so i add 3 to 1 and 3/10 which made 4 and 3/10.
