Before the weekend Mr. Harbeck gave us are last fraction post to end off the unit.
Here are the instructions he gave us:
  1. You need to explain how to add and subtract fractions. Include an image and instructions on how to do the math. Give 3 examples one has to be a mixed number.
  2. You need to explain how to multiply fractions. Include an image and instructions on how to do the math. Give 2 examples one using proper fractions and one using mixed numbers.
  3. You need to explain how to divide fractions. Please show how to divide proper fractions and mixed numbers.

Pythagoras
We were given a assignment on Pythagoras.We had explain who he was. We were given an assignment on Pythagoras. We had explained who he was. Today I will be explaining who Pythagoras is.Pythagoras was a Greek mathematician who was born between 580 and 572 BC, and died between 500 and 490 BC.Pythagoras was the father of mathematics, geometry, music (specifically harmonics), philosophy and medicine. Pythagoras was also the first to start being a vegan because he thought that all animals were his friends that had passed on, also he was the first to say that the earth was a sphere not a square and that the earth was tilted on a axis which was why there were 4 seasons. Pythagoras was also the founding father of the west.

Legs- The legs are the opposite of the hypotenuse.----->

Hypotenuse- Its the longest side of a right triangle.----->

R.A.T- Stands for Right
Angle Triangle.------------->

Greek- Pythagoras was Greek

Theorem- a formula or a theorem it can be both, a²+b²=c². A Theorem is a statement that proves how they figured out what they were doing.

Triangle----------------->
  • All sides equal 180 degrees. Plus theta and beta which equal 90 degrees .
  • It is also calle a R.A.T (Right angle triangle)
  • The opposite side of the right angle is the hypotenuse
  • The opposite side of the hypotenuse is the Legs ( which make up the right angle)
  • The Legs of a right triangle also make up 90




<--- Square-
  • A square is quadrilateral meaning it has 4 sides.
  • There are four 90 degree angles in a square.
  • Half of a square is a triangle.
  • All sides are are the same.



a²+b²=c²- Its the formula for the Pythagorean Theorem.
Which is "The area of the square built upon the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares upon the remaining sides". --------->
  • A theorem is a idea that has been demonstrated to be true or it is assumed that it would work.
  • Also it is a rule or law made by a formula like the Pythagorean Theorem.




Word Problems

My first problem isn't actually a word problem it with shapes instead of words.


Problem # 1: To solve this problem you need to know how to do the Pythagorean Theorem which is a²+b²=c². Today is will show you how to.

Solution: ( Theorem)
a²+b² = c²
a²+8²-8² = 10²-8²
a²= 10²-8²
a²= (10x10) - (8x8)
a² = 100 - 64
a² = 36
a² = 36
a = 6





Problem # 2 Now I will show you how do find the perimeter of this board game.
Solution: This is how to solve this question using the Pythagorean Theorem.
a= 15cm- to get 15 you have to √225cm² ( area of the inside square.)
b=15
c=?(21.213)- This is what we are trying to find out.
Theorem:
a²+b² = c²
15²+15² = c²
(15x15) - (15x15) = c²
225 + 225 = c²
450= c²
450= √
21.213 = c
To find the perimeter you need to add up a,b and c 4 times, because that's how many triangles there are.
P=(15+21.123) + (15+21.123)+ (15+21.123)+(15+21.123) = 144.852
P=144.852




If you look below you will find a video on how to solve for A² and also for C².
The reason why i have to different videos is because Mr. Harbeck accidentally deleted ours by mistake (it happens when you have to upload and delete a lot of movies that are either not right or right, you don't know sometimes.)

Today in class Mr. Harbeck went over the homework we had to do on pg.41in our purple booklet.
Then Mr. Harbeck showed us how to use algebra tiles to answer additive and subtractive questions. Next he wrote some questions down for us to do in our colorful booklet.
What are algebra tiles.
Algebra tiles are things you draw to show how you explained it instead of just answering it.

Here are some.
Now Mr. Harbeck showed us how to use Algebra tiles with a Additive equation and Subtractive.
I will be showing you a picture later but now I am going to tell you the steps first.

In a equation the rectangle is N,so don't put in the sign and the cubes are regular numbers.

Additive Example:

After you have drawn the Algebra tiles for N+3=5, you now add the negative cubes.
( ones with arrows).
(Which is 3, because you add the opposite of + which is - )
Then you circle the zero pairs (red and white cubes) and put a x through them.
I didn't because its a picture but you can if you are writing it.
Now they are nothing.
Next you only have the rectangle and the = sign on the left and+2 on the right.
After that you combine them both so its reads rectangle = 2 positive cubes. N=2
Now here is a picture of what I just said



Subtractive Example:

Pay it Forward

How I Paid it Forward

We watched a movie called Pay it Forward. The main message was that just one person can make a difference.


During winter break we were asked to Pay it Forward, make a difference in someone you know or a strangers life.

These were the question we got asked.


Who are you going to help?

What are you going to do?
Where are you going to do this?
When are you going to do this?


My random act of kindness was that I took some of my used clothes that I wasn't wearing and donated them for someone else to use. I donated my clothes to Value Village were they take in used clothes to help random people out. I am going to do this over the winter break and hope it makes a difference in someone else's life.


Also these were the other questions we got asked after we Paid it Forward.
What happened?
How did you feel?
How did the person/people react?
Did you ask the person/people involved to "Pay it Forward"?
How did the person/people react to this?
If you did not ask the person/people to "Pay It Forward", how come?


I felt good that I was helping someone else and also that some of the clothes were going to charities.The worker reacted by being surprised on how many clothes I brought in and said thank you very much for your donation.



The reason I didn't ask her to pay it forward was that I was unsure of when to say it and I got nervous.Also what to say if the person asked what pay it forward meant, even though I could explain it I felt uncomfortable.


I was asked to answer this Question "
Can one person make a difference".
My answer is yes, One person can make a difference because even though the act of kindness you showed to whoever you helped out now sees that one person can really make a difference and wants to do the same thing too but doesn't know how to show it. My final question to you is that " Can one person make a difference", its your decision. You are the only one who can make that decision.

First, You have to regroup the variables. Which are n and -5n

Second you have to rewrite the question so it reads n-5n+3+12
Third you put buckets under the 2 terms
Fourth you now answer what is in the buckets, which is n-5n=-4n
next it is +3+12=+15

Now you rewrite the question again and it should say this: -4n+15

Chapter 3

One step Equation Solving


Additive:

To do a additive equation you have to know the steps or (rules).
First you write out your question, the question I choose was n-3+5=10
Second you have to clean up the junk in the question.

To clean the junk up you put these |______| under the the two constants -3 and +5.
After you have done that it should say n+2=10.
The third step is adding the opposite, and in this case the opposite of +2 is -2.
Whatever you do to the front you have to do to the back(answer), make balance.
Fourth is you cancel out the zero pairs, which leaves you with n= on you left and 10-2 on your right.
Now you have to answer 10-2=8. N = 8


I will now show you how to Verify:
First you rewrite the question: n-3+5=10 or n+2=10
Second you substitute the 8 for n.
Then it should say: 8+2=10 or 8-3+5=10

The final step is 10=10



Subtractive

To do a subtractive equation you have to know the steps or (rules).
First you write out your question, the question I chose was n-(-5)=17Second you have to clean up the junk in the question.
To clean the junk up you change the - signs both to + signs

After you have done that it should say n+5=17 or n+(+5)=17.
The third step is adding the opposite, and in this case the opposite of +5 is -5.
Whatever you do to the front you have to do to the back(answer), make balance.

Fourth is you cancel out the zero pairs, which leaves you with n= on you left and 17-5 on your right.
Now you have to answer 17-5=12. N = 12

I will now show you how to Verify:
First you rewrite the question: n-(-5)=17 or n+5=17

The final step is 17=17

To do a multiplicative equation you have to know the steps or (rules).
First you write out your question, the question I chose was 12n=180

Second you have to divide 12n by 12. Which gives you n.

Whatever you do to the front you have to do to the back(answer), make balance. Now you have to answer 180 divided by 12. Which leaves you with n= on you left and 15 on your right. N=15


I will now show you how to Verify:
First you rewrite the question: 12n=180

Second you substitute the 15 for n. It should look like this 12(15)=180

The final step is 180=180



Divisive

To do a divisive equation you have to know the steps or (rules).
First you write out your question, the question I chose was n divide 6 =6

Second you have to multiply 6n by 6. Which gives you n.

Whatever you do to the front you have to do to the back(answer), make balance.

Now you have to answer 6 multiplied by 6. Which leaves you with n= on you left and 36 on your right. N=15


I will now show you how to Verify:
First you rewrite the question: 12n=180
Second you substitute the 15 for n. It should look like this 12(15)=180

The final step is 180=180

Brendan's Integer Story

Once upon a time there was a boy named Jake who was bored and decided to go outside and find something to do. When he got outside he saw his friends so he went to see them. When he got there he had to solve an integer question which was (+9) + (-3) to solve it Jake used algebra tiles and the answer that he got was +6. After Jake answered the question he could now play with his friends. Later when he finished playing with his friends, Jake went to the store to buy a drink and some food because he was thirsty and hungry after playing so much. When he got to the store he saw a ruffian, so Jake stayed very quiet on the side wall of the store so the ruffian didn't see him or hear him and he also saw people hiding so they didn't get seen also and looking to the right someone had a knife and I talked to them quietly so I wouldn't get caught and they slid it across to me very gently. Now the ruffian was leaving so it was Jake's time to take a risk but before Jake could walk up to him he had to answer another integer question which was (+20) +(-13) to solve the integer question Jake used a number line and he got +7for his answer then he was allowed to walk fast, but for only a limited amount each time so Jake used his power wisely so he could catch up with the ruffian without him noticing he was there now when the ruffian turned around I would hide in the aisles and then come out. Now he was in arm distance so I could attack him but when I tired to attack him but he saw me and grabbed me, then put a knife to my chin, at that point I knew it was over. Then out of nowhere I heard a voice it was saying “if you answer this integer question you will beat the ruffian and win". The question was (-25) + (+53) now he solved the question with the money method I have 53 and I owe 25 and the answer that he came up with was +28. When he answer the question correctly he gained magical powers to defeat the ruffian and save the all the people in the store. After everybody cheered and thanked him for saving there lives, Jake had finally bought what he came here to the store for was for a drink and some food.
After having his drink and eating his food Jake kept on walking to find out what would come next. As he was walking he noticed that someone was getting bullied so he ran up and told them to stop bulling them but the bully didn't care and kept on going. At that point Jake grabbed the bully and told him to stop firmly and then the bully said only if you can answer this integer question (+30) +(-175) , Jake then answered -145 then the bully was amazed that he got the right answer because nobody got it before when he asked them. Now the bully was scared and stop bulling the person because he thought that he might have a plan to do something to him, the bully then left not knowing what to say. to be continued


Last time we heard about are friend Jake was when he stop a bully.
Now we continue our story when Jake scared the bully away.


It had been a couple days since Jake saved that kid from getting bullied.

Then when Jake was just minding his own business he heard a cry for help.
Jake wondered where the person was yelling from because he couldn't see anybody that needed his help. So then Jake followed the voice, he kept on following it but still couldn't find it. Now Jake was thinking it was a joke but out of nowhere he heard a voice saying "if you can answer this subtracting question I will grant you a tracking device so you can find the person. The question was (+19) - (-91). Jake knew that you don't subtract integers you add there opposites, so Jake rewrote the question (+19) + (+91) and the answer he got was +110. Then the voice granted his wish and Jake got a tracking device as promised. Then Jake used the tracking device to find the person in trouble. When he got to where the tracking device said where the person was he found a note on the ground that said "Please help me I have been taken to a deserted island (in the pacific ocean) and they have left me here, please help if you are reading this, from for some strange reason the name was scribbled out so Jake couldn't read who it was from .

Then it said in very small print that only Jake could read was If you answer this integer question I will tell you where I am and the question was 8- (-7)+3 +(-5) Jake then rewrote the question so it read 8+ (+7)+3 +(-5) and the answer Jake got was positive 13 so still in small print it said Ouvéa. Jake didn't know a place called Ouvéa so now Jake was going to the Library. Now Jake was worried about this person so he went to run to his house to get his stuff and after go to the Library . But while Jake was getting out of the place where he was he got swung upside down
with a rope tied to his leg and then someone popped out of the bushes and. To be continued
