Today in math class we checked the test we did yesterday and I am going to show how to solve 2 of the given problems.

9m=3m-48

The fist thing to do is to move the variable to the left sides.





I subtracted both sides of the equation by -3m to cancel the variable on the right side.Remember that what you did to the right side, you must do it to the left side and vice-versa.














We have to get rid of multiplication, so we have to divide both sides of the equation by the numerical coefficient 6. Again remember that what you did to the left side, you must do it to the right side.


















To check if your answer is correct:
1. copy the given equation
9m = 3m - 48
2. substitute the answer (-8) to m
9(-8) = 3 (-8) -48
3. solve
-72= -72


The next one I am going to solve is a word problem.

5. You bought a pen for $5 and 4 erasers. You spent a total $25. How much did each eraser cost?

First we have to represent the cost of each eraser by n

Let n = cost of each eraser

4n + 5 = 25 translate words into equations



4n + 5 = 25 simplify the equation by subtracting both sides of the

-5 = -5 equation by 5

4n/4 = 20/4 divide both sides of the equation by 4

n = 5 ~~~~~ the cost of each eraser

to check the answer, write the equation

4n + 5 =25

substitute n by the answer which is 5

4(5) + 5 = 25

20 + 5 = 25

25 = 25

Last friday, instead of Mr. Harbeck, we had a substitute in our class. We went over our homework which was on page 52. We discussed about PATTERNS, there are two types of patterns : Functional and Recursive Patterns.


*Functional Patterns - across the xy axis.


Let x= you say
4x - 2




here's another example:

Let x= you say

3x + 7

















*Recursive Pattern - goes up and down an axis.

Let x = you say

x/2 + 5



For our homework, Ms.(Mrs.) Wilson gave us questions 4-10:

      Hey guys. Happy ground hog day!
      Anyway, today in class we took a test. It mostly had word problems.
      We also did page 50, questions 1 - 6. This is homework by the way. He showed us how to do the first two questions in class. Here they are:


      x + 3 (x + 4) = 20
      Now do the distributive property for the following things in red:
      x + 3 (x + 4) = 20
      You have to multiply the 3 with the x and the 4, so now it looks like this:
      x + 3x + 12 = 20
      Combine the x and the 3x (like terms):
      4x + 12 = 20
      Get rid of the constant by adding negative 12 to both sides:
      4x + 12 = 20
      - 12 - 12
      Now the question is 4x = 8. Isolate the variable by dividing the 4:
      4x / 4 = 8 / 4
      You are now left with the answer of:
      x = 2
      Remember to verify!
      The second question he gave us was:
      6 ( y - 1) + 8 = 32
      Do the distributive property:
      6y - 6 + 8 = 32
      Now combine the like terms, which in this case are the constants:
      6y + 2 = 32
      Get rid of the constant by adding negative 2 to both sides:
      6y + 2 = 32
      - 2 - 2
      Now isolate the variable by dividing both sides by 6:
      6y / 6 = 30 / 6
      Your answer is:
      y = 5
      REMEMBER TO VERIFY!

      Today in class we looked over a few questions from our past homework. I'm going to show the questions we went over.

      Pg 43.

      sentence: The number is -84.
      Let N = number

      n/-7 - 2=10
      +2 +2
      n/-7 = 12(-7)
      n=-84
      n/-7 - 2=10
      -84/-7 -2=10
      12-2=10
      10=10

      Pg 46.


      sentence: The width of the field is 36 yds.
      Let N= Width
      2n+3=75
      -3 -3
      2n/2=72/2
      n=36
      2n+3=75
      2(26)+3=75
      72=3=75

      Later on, we got assigned to do page 47 and 48. We had to pick 5 questions from page 47. Since both pages are the same you do the 5 that you didn't pick on page 47 ,on page 48, if that makes any sense. Here are four questions that I picked.

      1) Mr. Enigma is 68 years old.

      1/4n -5=12
      n/4 -5=12

      Today in class we were doing word problems. *Our next test has alot of word problems*
      Some main things in word problems : You always have to have a sentance. If theres units in the problem the units must be in the sentance. You have to say what the N or X means or represents.
      Here are some examples we did in class:
      Number 14 on page 44
      Start with a sentance : The number is 70
      Let N - means number


      We also did this example from page 45:
      Start with a sentance : Each Chair weighs 9 lbs
      * You have to have the units**
      Let C- means chair
      Then we have to do pg 43 , 44 ,45 and 46 all the word problems
      Here I did one from each page :

      Here is an example from page 44

      Now from page 45
      Sentance There was 8 hours of labor.

      Today in math we wrote a quiz. The quiz was pretty easy, if you did your homework and look at the blog. We also corrected it. Here in my scribe I will show you four questions from the quiz. With the solving and verifying. These are the four questions.

      Today in class, Mr.Harbeck went over yesterday's homework that were difficult for some people. We went over pages 43 and 44.

      I'll show you two examples from page 43.

      For homework:
      1) Make sure your finished page 43.
      2) Do the rest of page 44. But you don't need to do the word problems, but you can if you want.
      3) Do the equations on page 45. Don't do the word problems.
      4) Pick any 6 questions from page 46, and do them.
      That's about everything we did in class today.

      Today in class we went over we went over some questions from the homework yesterday. After that Mr. Harbeck told us all the questions that we were supposed to have in our multicoloured book, and here they are: on the 2 step equations part (the bottom part), on the left side, first page (additive) we were supposed to have 4 examples of your choice, (with out using algebra tiles) and on the next page on the left side still, we were supposed to have the following subtractive questions: 7x-2=61, and -8t-23=-15. On the next page after that, the multiplicative page we needed to have these questions: -n+4=-2, and 3n+5=55. On the equations side (the right side) we needed to draw these in algebra tiles: the additive page, 2x+3=9, and -2x+4=10. On the subtactive equations page we needed to have 2x-6=4, and -2x-3=9. On the multiplicative equations page we needed to have 2n+1=5. We also did alot of examples on the board, they were mostly divisive, but we did do one multiplicative review question with algebra tiles, which has already been done in previous scribes.


      Today we learned all about how to do divisive 2 step equations. All the divisive questions that we did were supposed to go into our multicolored book. We did five questions in class without algebra tiles but I am just going to show you how to do 2 of them.


      The first question that I will show you how to do is n/4+3=15.


      (Here's a hint: always remember that the variable gets canceled 2ND!)




      Here is the other question that we did, this one is a bit trickier, 1/4n+3=8


      (Here is another hint that might help: just remember, fractions are division!)

      -1/4 times a number.
      -Think 1n/4, draw n/4.



      -When you substitute, you substitute for n.

      That was basically all that we did in class today, a few divisive examples, but we do have homework, it is to finish the rest of page 43, and the first 6 questions on page 44 from the purple book, and I don't think that you need to draw algebra tiles for these ones. We also have a quiz on Friday on 2 step equations.


      For tomorrow's scribe I pick Melanie, because she was supposed to do it today anyways!

      Today in class we had to move to Mr. Penner's room instead of Mr. Harbeck's. Mr. Harbeck had an inservice so we had a substitute. We went over our homework. He called up a few of us to write some questions on the board. Let's review from yesterday.


      1. Isolate Variable

      3. Balance

      4. Cancel Multiply

      5. Balance

      6. VERIFY

      We didn't do much in class, just reviewed abit on algebra tiles. We had homework though. It was the white sheet our substitute gave us. Section 10.2 Extra Practice.















      We had to choose 2 questions from question 1 and 2. The rest of the questions we had to do all of them. We had to draw all in algebra tiles.

      Today in class we started on the 2 step equations.
      On the inside of the blue, we wrote 2n+1=5.

      You isolate the variable (2n)
      Cancel constant (+1)
      Balance
      Cancel multiply (2n)
      Balance
      VERIFY

      There are 2 cancellations.

      You cancel the constant first. You get rid of the +1 with a -1.

      2n+1=5
      -1 -1
      2n=4


      You get rid of the variable second. You get rid of the times 2 with a divide by 2. n=2 After that, you verify.

      -2n+1=5
      -2(2)+1=5
      4+1=5
      -5=5

      You don't need all 4 lines. Only the parts in blue.

      After that, we went on to the next page on the front. We wrote 3n+4=19. We solved it 2 ways. The first way was the same with the last question. The other way, we just did the cancelling on the other side.

      3n+4=19-4/3
      n=15/3
      n=5

      The verifying is the same as the other way. After that, we switched to the 'equations' side (the front-right-bottom side) of the green where you draw the pictures. This is what we wrote.



      After that, we went to the back of the bottom-left green part and solved -2n+3=9 both ways. We went back to the other part of green (the bottom-right-back) and drew this.

      Our homework was in the purple booklet. Page 43, the multiplying questions only. I choose Zerlina to do the next scribe.

      Today in class we went over are homework that we got on Friday all 50 questions in the pink booklet. Then we got 10 more questions for homework and sorry thats all that I can remember.

      Today in class, watch a movie about Additive Equation and Subtractive Equation.
      Then Mr. Harbeck answering the question from homework yesterday by using the Algebra tiles for Additive and Subtractive Equation.Mr.Harbeck give some assignment about the Algebra Equation solving.

      Today in class Mr. Harbeck went over the homework we had to do on pg.41in our purple booklet.
      Then Mr. Harbeck showed us how to use algebra tiles to answer additive and subtractive questions. Next he wrote some questions down for us to do in our colorful booklet.
      What are algebra tiles.
      Algebra tiles are things you draw to show how you explained it instead of just answering it.

      Here are some.
      Now Mr. Harbeck showed us how to use Algebra tiles with a Additive equation and Subtractive.
      I will be showing you a picture later but now I am going to tell you the steps first.

      In a equation the rectangle is N,so don't put in the sign and the cubes are regular numbers.

      Additive Example:

      After you have drawn the Algebra tiles for N+3=5, you now add the negative cubes.
      ( ones with arrows).
      (Which is 3, because you add the opposite of + which is - )
      Then you circle the zero pairs (red and white cubes) and put a x through them.
      I didn't because its a picture but you can if you are writing it.
      Now they are nothing.
      Next you only have the rectangle and the = sign on the left and+2 on the right.
      After that you combine them both so its reads rectangle = 2 positive cubes. N=2
      Now here is a picture of what I just said



      Subtractive Example:
      After you have drawn the Algebra tiles for -3+N=7, you now add the positive cubes.
      ( ones with arrows).
      (Which is 3, because you add the opposite of - which is +)
      Then you circle the zero pairs (white and red cubes) and put a x through them.

      Next you only have the rectangle and the = sign on the left and +4 on the right.

      Today in class, we made a colorful booklet or a barn or booklet thingy. The colorful booklet's cover is blue so in case it gets lost people could easily recognize that the booklet belongs to someone from the room 8-73. Mr. Harbeck also gave us a purple booklet full of Algebra questions.



      First we discussed about Algebra Equation Solving Balance Scale and wrote it on the back of our colorful booklet.



      here's the example:





      the first step is to isolate the variable, second is to cancel using the opposite, third is to balance and then the last is to verify. . .









      Right after that we disscused about Additive Equations. Additive Equations is also part of Algebra Equation Solving.The steps are also the same.





      Step 1- isolate the variable

      Step 4- Verify

      After Additive, we already proceed to the Subtractive Equations. Subtractive Equation's steps are the same with the additive.

      note: as you can see, subtractive equation slightly different from additive because the constant of the subtractive equation is negative. . .
      For our homework, we have to do page 41 of our purple booklet. Mr. Harbeck asked us to do the Additive and Subtractive Equations only, which were numbers 1, 3, 6, 8, 12, 13, 15, 18, 20, and 23.
      Uhhmm...that's about everything we did in class today.
