Adding Fractions and Subtracting Fractions

- You have to change the denominators if they are not the same

- To add a mixed number you have to make it an improper fraction

Multiplying Fractions

-You multiply the numerator by the numerator, and the denominator by the denominator.

-When you multiply mixed numbers, you change them into improper fractions then you multiply the numerators and the denominators, then change it back.
-When you multiply a fraction by a whole number or vice versa you put the whole number over one

Dividing Fractions

-You could find the reciprocal of the second fraction and then times both of the fractions together.
- Or you can use a T-chart, but it wont work every time

Pythagoras Theorem

9:33 PM

(0) Comments

We were given 2 weeks to explain the Pythagorean Theorem. This is what I have learned in that time.
Artifact #1
Pythagoras was an Greek mathematician. He was born in Greece around 500 B.C.E and he had lived close to 100. Pythagoras died around 500 B.C and 490 B.C. He was the world's first vegetarian. He thought when you die you were re born as a animal, so he thought he would be eating his friends if he ate a animal. He proved the earth was round. He created the Pythagorean Theorem and proved it so it was named after him. He was considered farther of geometry and music. And some people thought he was a lunatic.

You need to know these key words:

Legs: Each triangle always has 2 legs. The legs will always be shorter then the hypotenuse. Is connected by the right angle.
Hypotenuse: The longest side of a triangle. Is across the right angle.
Theorem: A math statement that has been proven to be correct or true. This Theorem was
A² + B² = C².
R.A.T: Right Angle Triangle
Greek: People who lived in Greece, Pythagoras was o

His Theorem were...

This is example of the theorem.

Artifact #2

R.A.T. is an abbreviated form of Right Angle Triangle, which is a triangle that has a 90° angle.

Add Image
The legs are the shorter sides and the hypotenuse is the longer side.
Both Legs add up to 90 degrees
Theta and Beta are in the corners
Theta and Beta add up to 90 degrees
A Right Angle Triangle adds up to 180 degrees

Artifact #3

A square is a certain amount of right angle triangles combined.

If you were to divide a square in half you would get a triangle with 90 degrees.
There are four 90 degree angles in a square, if you add them together you would get 360 degrees.
A square has 4 even sides and can be identified by the little ticks on the squares sides.

A2=C2-B2
A2=10 squared -8 squared
A2= (10x10)-(8x8)
A2=100-64
A2=36
/A2=/36
A=6
A=6
A+A= ?
6+6=12mm

Here is a video explaing some of this stuff.

This is another video showing how you can get b or a if you have a/b and c.

Today in class we went over our questions from the pink booklet. We had to do 50 questions before the week end was over. After we went through the ones that were tough we got our home work to practice for out test tomorrow. We had 10 questions I am going to list 4.

Here is a adding example from the home work:

-12 + n = 25

[-12 +12] + n = 25 + 12

n = 37

-12 + n = 25

-12 + 37 = 25

25 = 25

Here is a subtracting question:

n - 6 = 14

n [-6 + 6] = 14 + 6

n = 20

n – 6 = 14

20 - 6 = 14

14 = 14

Here is a Multiplying one:

12n = 48

---- ----
12 12

n = 4

12n = 48

12(4) = 48

48 = 48

And finally a division question (it may be wrong)

(4)1 = 12(4)
--

4 n

n = 3

1

-- = 12

4 n

3

-- = 12

4

12=12

Well that was a little practice for the test/quiz tomorrow.

Comment on my mistakes!

Pay it Forward

In school we watched a movie called Pay it Forward. We were told to help a stranger or someone we know with a random act of kindness. The goal was to make some body's life a little easier. I decided to do snow shoveling because my aunt's house and mine had a lot of snow around it. I started on my Back Yard and moved to the front. It was cold so I wore gloves. After my house was done I went to my aunt's house. I did the front and some of the back ( The back was too much).
After I was done I felt happy knowing I did something and only got a thank you back. I learned that snow shoveling is hard if it is cold and gets tiring.

One person can make a difference with a little bit of effort. I got good feeling after helping my aunt.

Chapter 2: (xtra normal did not work)

Yusei: I am ready for any questions you got.
Jack: Oh really?
Yusei: Yes
Jack: Try this one then
Jack:
n+3-5n+12.
Yusei: Sure give me a few minutes.
Jack: Okay.
Yusei: The answer is -6n+15.
Jack: Wrong, now take a few minutes to figure out the right answer.
Yusei: okay...
Yusei: I know where I went wrong, I added the n to the -5n. But I should have subtracted the n from the -5n. Which makes it -4n+15.
Jack: Yes young one.
Yusei: See I'm good.
Jack: But you still have a second question.
Yusei: ahh...
Jack: here it is. 2 + 4(3n+8)
Yusei: This is a harder one... give me some more time.
Jack: Okay
Jack: ( 10 minutes later) Are you done yet?
Yusei: I've been done 8 minutes ago.
Jack: Then what were you doing?
Yusei: Watching Television.
Jack: What ever, so what is your answer?
Yusei:
12n + 10!
Jack: Wrong
Yusei: ahh man.
Jack: Here is the right answer
Jack:
12n + 34
Yusei: hmm....
Jack: Oh, you already know your mistake?
Yusei: Yes I do...
Jack: Okay what is it?
Yusei: I forgot to multiply 8 by 4 , then add the extra 2, which would have made 34.
Jack: Very well done.
Yusei: Hmm? but I got all the questions wrong.
Jack: But you found what your mistakes were.
Jack: That is what math is all about, learning from your mistakes.
Yusei: I get it now...
Jack: That is what matters
Jack: Well I'm off
Yusei: c ya
Jack: bye
Yusei: ...

Today in class we learned about how to do math in standard form. Instead of the regular integers with a *+* and *-* sign. He even gave us a new green booklet. The green booklet looked like the old grades but with a negative sign on some of the numbers. The old way our integer questions were before was at a grade 7 level.
<---- G 7 level.

The grade 8 level looks different and a little harder. it looks like this
<------Grade 8 level

You can see that the math questions look harder with out the brackets. Well here is a way to make life easier for you. If the question reads like this 6 - (-4) Have 6 owe owe 4 you switch the opposite so its 6 + (+4) which reads, have 6 and have 4. Here are some questions.

6+8 = 14

-4 - 3 = -7

14+8 = 22

-11 + 12 = 1

-50 - (100) = -150

For he next Scribe post I choose no one :P

Vikram's Integer Story

When Jack woke up he found him self in a black ally and with out his cell phone. Jack found a Microsoft phone on the ground. In that phone it said [ (+3) + (-3) =]. There was also a video that said that he is in a world of terror and that if he wants to get out he has to beat the land masters. Jack first decided to use the *algebra tiles method* because they numbers he had were not that high.

Jack beat the first trial on the world. He walked out side of the cave and he saw a person with a bread, the person said * you there, are there any chances that you have a Microsoft phone?*. Jack said yes. The man told Jack to answer a question or he may not pass. Jack said yes because there is no help just staying there. The man said (+5) + (-4). Jack said that that is easy.

The man let Jack past. Jack was wondering why did the man ask if he had a Microsoft phone. Jack kept walking till he saw a mountain a distance away. Jack didn't see any thing else remotely close and interesting so he started towards the mountain. There were allot of animals along the way towards the mountain. Jack saw one animal that looked like a dog but wasn't. The dog like creature fowl led Jack so Jae decided to keep it as a pet. He named her Buddy. Jack made it to the mountain in one piece. When he got to the entrance of the mountain he figured out it wasn't a mountain. It was a giant building. On it there was a sign says *Microsoft Crop*. David was very confused of what a Microsoft building was doing here. He entered the building. A lawyer came in and told Jack if he didn't answer this question he would sue him. Jack said * Sue what, I got nothing?* The layer sad he has a phone, and with out it he would not be able to go on. Jack agreed to the lawyers challenge. The lawyer said (-7) + (-6).

Jack did the question and the layer fled away. Jack went in the elevator and right before the highest floor the elevator stopped on floor 99. He got out and say a person that had a lab coat on. Jack said Hi to him but he did not respond. Jack tapped him but he went through like no one was there. Buddy then went up to the man and he responded. The man tried to get rid of Buddy by throwing her down the elevator but Jack grabbed Buddy and the man saw Jack. The white coated man told Jack to answer this question and he won't let Buddy be killed. Even though Jack was with Buddy for a little while he had a bond with her so Jack said he would try his all. The white coated man said (-45) + (+97). Jack said that is a very high number. He then thought of uses the money method he learned in school.

Jack said his answer is. The white coated man said that his answer is wrong. He then showed him the real answer.
The white coated man said that because he was so close that he would give him another try with a harder question.

To be Continued....

Jack was given a new question by the white coasted man. The question was (+3) - (-6)

Jack answered the question correctly and got Buddy back. Jack asked the white coated man that what world he was in. The man replied with * A world ruled by bill gates*. Jack was shocked by what the man had said. He knew that Microsoft was evil but not this much. The man also said that there was only 1 thing standing in between Bill Gate's world Domination...and it was Nintendo. With Mario out of the way Bill Gates thought he had nothing to fear but Mario had a brother and he was Luigi. Jack asked the man where the Luigi and the rest of Nintendo was. The man replied by saying a * There is a Castle towards the west of here, you will find Luigi there, Bill Gates doesn't know about this yet* the white coated man leaves with a smile on his face.

Jack headed towards the west with Buddy. He got to the castle within 2 days. Luigi greeted him with a *I've been expecting you*. Luigi let Jack in. Luigi gave Jack the plan to get Bill Gates for all the things he did, including killing his brother... The plan was set and with the army that Luigi got they tackled Bill gates and Sony. The battle was very epic. Everyone fought with courage. In the end Master Chief had Luigi cornered. Master Chief removed his helmet and Bill Gates was under it. Bill gates was about to end Luigi's life but the white coated man came out of no where and told Bill Gates their should be a better way to solve this problem. Bill Gates suggested a math question. The white coated man called jack to answer the question. Bill Gates gave the math question (-7) + (+5) - (-3). Jack said he will answer it.

Jack got it right so Bill Gates was very alarmed by Jack's answer. Bill Gates was sentenced to prison for trying to in slave the world. Jack was thanked by Luigi and link and Jack was transported back home. When Jack got home, he sold his Xbox 360 and got a Wii. When Jack realized how he got into the other world he saw a note by Luigi saying that he called him to that world in order to save it. Jack saw that Buddy had become a dog and he was able to keep her.
