Hello everyone. I'll just be showing you 5 examples from our homework. And Simran will show you another 5 on her post. My 5 questions are on the first page/pg. C-41.

I'll be doing A and B from the top row, M and O from the bottom row, and word problem P.
First of all, you need to remember the steps for adding fractions, with different denominators.
*If subtraction, use the same steps, but subtract instead of add (step 4)*

1) write down the question
2) write down the multiples for each denominator, until you find a number that both denominators have AKA LCD (Least Common Denominator)
3) for both sides of the plus sign, do this: (LCD/D)N=NN (Least Common Denominator divided by Denominator, times Numerator, equals New Numerator)
4) add the fractions

For Question M, you'll notice that there are brackets. Don't be afraid. Just do the inside of the brackets first (using the steps above), then just repeat what I've already shown you above.




















RELAX! You just need to convert/change that improper fraction into a mixed number. Hmmm... how do you do that? Well here's your answer. (shown below)

1) divide the numerator by the denominator
*subtraction doesn't always work*
2) instead of having a remainder, that number will be the numerator
3) rewrite your mixed fraction












Now you've solved inside the brackets. Now do the rest.
*When dealing with mixed numbers, just bring them down, then add/subtract*



















Okay, now here is question O. There are 3 fractions to add, but there are no brackets. So this means we aren't doing the same thing we did for question M.























Now here is the last question I'll show you. It's word problem P.
A BigBurger has 1/4 pound of meat. A SuperBurger has 1/3 pound of meat. How much more meat was used for the SuperBurger? ___ lb.
*When solving word problems, always remember the unit (lb.) and a simple sentence.*
The SuperBurger used 1/12 lb. more meat than the BigBurger.
There, 5 questions from our homework. There are 37 questions you need to do. I've already given away 5, so tomorrow everyone should have at least 5 done. *wink wink*

For homework we got assigned to do 37 questions from a work sheet. For my scribe I will be doing 5 questions from C-42.

Today in class we did the following: correct yesterday's homework, and subtracting mixed numbers. We are also reminded that the student led. portfolios are due. on Monday. Then we had homework (sheet Mr. Harbeck gave us).

Yesterday's homework: Question 1


There are two ways that you could subtract mixed numbers. This is the first way. First, we are going to change the mixed number to an improper fraction. To do that, the denominator stays the same as long as it's the common denominator. To find the numerator, you multiply the denominator (4) by the mixed whole number (36). After, you add the numerator (144+1). Do the same for 2 3/4. Then, you could subtract. After subtracting, you have to change the improper fraction (answer) to a mixed number. To do that, you divide. So it's 134 divided by 4. Which gives you the answer of 33 2/4 or 33 1/2.


The second way for subtracting mixed numbers is to borrow. You use this if the wholes are big, and when you don't want to multiply (if the number's too big for you). To use this, you write the mixed number a different way, but still having the same amount (eg. 36= 35 4/4). Add the whole with the fraction (35 4/4 + 1/4). Then, you could subtract. Which gives you the answer (33 2/4 or 33/ 1/2).

This is another question using way 2: borrowing.

Don't forget to do your homework (worksheet). And if you're not done your eportfolios, finish it . One more thing, the 2 minutes storyboard and script are also due on Monday.

Today in class we went over our homework, the 4 adding fracion questions and the 3 word problems. Here are the correct answers:



1) She can make the cake whole again.


5/8 + 1/2=9/8 or 1 1/8


5/8 + 1/2 change to 4/8= 9/8 or 1 1/8













2) 1/2 fraction of a package of buns is needed for the hotdogs.

12/8 = 1 4/8 = 1/2




















3) She has 1 7/20 L of punch.


3/5+1/2= 1 1/10


1 1/10+1/4=1 7/20


















We also added a few mixed numbers.

















For homework we got subtraction questions.


3/4 - 3/8=


Subtracting fractions is just like adding fractions, you change the whole but instead of adding you subtract.

Here are the rest of the homework questions.

5/8 -1/3 =

4/5 - 1/2 =

13/15 - 4/5=

Today in class we first went over the homework from yesturday but i won't do them because Aleiah already did.

Then we got todays homework:




Also we got word problems i will do 2 of them:

When Betty opens the cake box, Betty finds that 3/8 of the cake has been squished. Luckly she finds half a container of ice cream in the freezer. If she molds it properly she will have enough to make the cake whole again.

3/8 -cake

1/2 - ice cream

3/8 + 1/2 =

3/8 + 4/8=

= 7/8 !

next question

Betty is making punch for the party goers. She needs 3/5 L of orange juice, 1/2 L of lemonade and 1/4 L of Grenadine. How much liquid is in the punch?

3/5 -orange juice

1/2 - Lemonade

1/4 Grenadine

3/5 + 1/2+ 1/4 =

12/20 + 10/20+ 5/20=

= 27/20

change to mixed = 1 and 7/20

Today in class we still talk about squares but we also learned how to cut them into equal pieces. We used tiles to make them in eqaul pieces.

I am gonna make some examples of how to cut them into equal pieces.

I dont know how to explain it in words so I am just going to put some more pictures as examples.

all you do is basicly cutting them in equal pieces.

Today in class we made a times table (12x12). We made this on grid paper and made a chart along with the times table called the Perfect Square Chart.

On the times table, we were suppose to color the numbers that would make a perfect square which would be in a diagonal. And color the other numbers with different colors, like so


And here is the Perfect Square Chart. In this chart it has the number squared, the factors, and the answer.


We also had to answer "to be in the Perfect Square club you must be..." and "if you don't belong to the perfect square club you..."

I answered these the best I could.
1.) To be in the Perfect Square club you must be a whole number meaning you cannot have a decimal.

So today we corrected right angle problems and the mean, median, and mode problem. Then, we were given 3 problems to solve using the Pythagoras theorem. TEST : THURSDAY. These problems will help you better on the test.

By the way, √ <-- this means the square root. Question 1:
a^2+b^2=c^2
a^2+2^2=8^2
-2^2 -2^2
a^2=8^2-2^2
a^2=64-4
a^2=60
√a^2=√60
a=7.745

Question 2:

a^2+b^2=c^2
a^2+13^2=20^2
-13^2 -13^2
a^2=20^2-13^2
a^2=400-169
a^2=331
√a^2=√331
a=18.193

Question 3:

a^2+b^2=c^2
6^2+b^2=23^2
-6^2 -6^2
b^2=23^2-6^2
b^2=529-36
b^2=493
√b^2=√493
b=22.206

After, we were given these questions:

I can't really help you on this because I don't understand the last 2 questions.

But the first questions answer is : 1/3

The Following times were recorded, in seconds. For the runners in a race.
20.2, 16.5, 40.4, 18.5, 21.4, 20.5, 17.1, 24.5, 19.0
What is the range of the times?
What are the mean and median of the times?
Identify any possible outliers. Should the Outlier(s) be removed from the data set?

The first thing you should do is arrange the data set in ascending order.

16.5, 17.1, 18.5, 19.0, 20.2, 20.5, 21.4, 24.5, 40.4
We will start with the range
to get the range you must take the greatest number and subtract the least from it.
Greatest - least = range
40.4 - 16.5 = 23.9

Next we will find the median this is where the ordering in ascending order comes in handy.
You have to find the middle number one way is to get rid of the ends so until you only have one or two numbers in the middle.


To get the mean you need to add up all the numbers in the data set and divide by how many numbers in the data set.

sum of all data 198.1
_________________ = 22.01

number of data 9

last we will find the outlier if there is one an outlier is a number that doesn't fit in in this case all the numbers are less than 25 but one which is 40.4 it is an outlier. sometimes an outlier will kill the set of data and destroy the mean with the outlier the mean is 22.o1 without the outlier it is 19.71 Sometimes it is smart to take out the outlier before finding the mean. For example it is smart to take it out so it doesn't completely mess up the mean.

Pythagorean Theroem

The Pythagorean Theroem is something we have been learning in math class for about two weeks now.


Vocabulary
legs - the two sides of the right triangle that makes the 90 degree angle (side a and b)
hypotenuse - the longest side of the right triangle (side c)
R.A.T - Right Angle Triangle. Has a 90 degree angle
Greek - a person from Greece and the form of language
theorem - something to be proved from other formulas.

Artifacts

Pythagoras
A Greek mathematician who was born between 580 and 572 BC, he died between 500 and 490 BC. People call him the "father of math and geometry." He was the first person to discover that the earth was round and that it revolved around the sun. He was also the first person to be a vegetarian (a person who only eats vegetables). Pythagoras is also famous for the Pythagorean Theorem.
