OK, so our group did a project on poverty in the Philippines and Kenya. This movie tell you all about how limited life is for the poor over there. It also tells you how we (in Canada) can help to stop poverty in these countries. Our group worked really hard on this project, so I hope that you enjoy it!

Pythagorean Theorem

12:04 PM

(0) Comments

In this post I am going to be talking about the Pythagorean theorem. I am going to use the vocabulary while I explain how the artifacts are linked so that it is less complicated. I am also going to explain some of the vocabulary in my pictures, and I will put the vocabulary words in bold just so you know.

Artifact #1

Pythagoras was an ancient Greek mathematician that lived in many places throughout his life. He was born in Greece around 580 B.C.E. and lived to be about 100. He was most famous for creating the Pythagorean Theorem (that comes in later). He was a very influential man in his time, because not only did he create the Pythagorean Theorem he also; declared that the Earth was round, was considered the father of Geometry, father of music (specifically harmonics), and may have been the first vegan (doesn't eat any animal products). He was considered a lunatic by some people because he believed in reincarnation, he said that he could hear his deceased friends in animals.

Here are the other artifacts, as you will see, they are all connected (the other vocabulary is in there too)!

Artifact #2

Artifact #3

A right angled triangle also has a 90 degree angle, that's what makes it a right triangle. To solve for the hypotenuse you have to use the equation (which comes later).
Artifact #4

Pythagoras used his special equation to solve for C. It states that:"The area of a square built upon the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares upon the remaining sides." The equation "a2+b2=c2" is used to solve for a right triangle.

I am now going to solve for a.

I have just shown you how the artifacts/vocabulary are connected. But in case you don't get it I'll explain. Pythagoras is Greek. He also came up with a theorem and formula, involving right angled triangles and squares. The theorem solves for a, b, or c. It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it!

Here are some problems that I am going to solve using the Pythagorean theorem.
Problem #1

Here is the solution for one triangle:
A2=C2-B2
A2=10 squared -8 squared
A2= (10x10)-(8x8)
A2=100-64
A2=36
/A2=/36
A=6
Now you have to find the length of the question mark.

A=6
A+A= ?
6+6=12mm

Problem #2

A measures to 10mm
B measures to 2mm
The distance between a and b is 16mm.
B=10+2=12
A²+B²=C²
10²+12²=C²
(10x10) + (12x12)=C²
100+44=C²
√100+√44=C²
15.62=C

Today in class we went over we went over some questions from the homework yesterday. After that Mr. Harbeck told us all the questions that we were supposed to have in our multicoloured book, and here they are: on the 2 step equations part (the bottom part), on the left side, first page (additive) we were supposed to have 4 examples of your choice, (with out using algebra tiles) and on the next page on the left side still, we were supposed to have the following subtractive questions: 7x-2=61, and -8t-23=-15. On the next page after that, the multiplicative page we needed to have these questions: -n+4=-2, and 3n+5=55. On the equations side (the right side) we needed to draw these in algebra tiles: the additive page, 2x+3=9, and -2x+4=10. On the subtactive equations page we needed to have 2x-6=4, and -2x-3=9. On the multiplicative equations page we needed to have 2n+1=5. We also did alot of examples on the board, they were mostly divisive, but we did do one multiplicative review question with algebra tiles, which has already been done in previous scribes.

Today we learned all about how to do divisive 2 step equations. All the divisive questions that we did were supposed to go into our multicolored book. We did five questions in class without algebra tiles but I am just going to show you how to do 2 of them.

The first question that I will show you how to do is n/4+3=15.

(Here's a hint: always remember that the variable gets canceled 2ND!)

Here is the other question that we did, this one is a bit trickier, 1/4n+3=8

(Here is another hint that might help: just remember, fractions are division!)

-1/4 times a number.
-Think 1n/4, draw n/4.

-When you substitute, you substitute for n.

That was basically all that we did in class today, a few divisive examples, but we do have homework, it is to finish the rest of page 43, and the first 6 questions on page 44 from the purple book, and I don't think that you need to draw algebra tiles for these ones. We also have a quiz on Friday on 2 step equations.

For tomorrow's scribe I pick Melanie, because she was supposed to do it today anyways!

Please comment and tell me ANYTHING that I can change!

Pay it Forward

2:22 PM

(3) Comments

In class we watched the movie "Pay it forward", it is about a person that believes that just one person can make a difference. After watching the movie, we were asked to do a random act of kindness over the holiday's and ask them to "pay it forward". I decided that I was going to help out my church by serving food at a free lunch that they were having at the church. I did this on Sunday, January 4Th. I chose this act because I would be helping a lot of people at once, and because it would make me feel like a better person.

1) What happened?

2) How did you feel?

3) How did the person or people react?

4) Did you ask the person or people involved to "pay it forward"? How did the person or people react to this?

5) If you did not ask the person or people to pay it forward, how come?

I served food to people from my church and also people not from my church. As I served the food people smiled at me and thanked me for it. It felt great to know that I was helping my church for a good cause. The person in charge of the event was grateful that I had volunteered for the event. When I asked her if she would "pay it forward", she gave me a funny look and asked what that was. I explained it to her, and she said that she would pay it forward and not forget.

The question is: Can one person make a difference? My answer to that would have to be YES, of course one person can make a difference, it doesn't have to big or life changing, as long as you do something good and it makes the person you did it for happy, and that's all that matters.

That was how I did my "Pay it Forward" over the holiday's.

Today in class we started ALGEBRA... dun dun dun.. actually its not that hard. We made a new little booklet about it too. We labeled the booklet "My Algebra Words." Mr.Harbeck also gave us our pink booklet about algebra.I'm now going to try to explain what we learned about algebra as best as I can, I'm going to use the example we did in class today. Here is an ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION (an algebra question that can have many answers.)

Some other ways to say this question are: a number plus six

unknown number plus six

a number plus positive six (there is a pattern)

In this question n is the VARIABLE (a letter that represents a number)

This is not a completed equation yet, there are many answers to this question and you can only have one. It should be like this

Now that there is an answer to the question, this algebraic expression has turned into an ALGEBRAIC EQUATION (an algebra question with only one answer).

Some other ways to say this equation are: a number plus six equals fourteen

a number AND six is fourteen.

Now you just subtract 6 from 14 and you have the answer

That is what we learned about how to do algebra today.

We wrote that example on the first square. On the second-sixth square was part of our homework. On the second square we wrote all of the different adding words. On the third square we wrote all of the different subtraction words. On the fourth square we wrote all of the different multiplying words. On the fifth square we wrote all of the different dividing words. Finally on the sixth square we wrote all of the different words for equals.

Our homework today was the first ten questions on the first page of the pink booklet, and the five squares on our "My algebra words" booklet.

I found an algebra website and a video that might be helpful.

I hope that the video helps too!!

Chapter#2-Combining like terms and the Distributive property

Spy:Hi

Ninja:Hi!

Spy:Can you answer a question? If you get it wrong .....I'll have to ask you another question!

Ninja:whats the question?

Spy:n+3-5n+12

(Long Pause)

Ninja:OK, I think I have the answer, you just have to simplify the question, right?

Spy:Right!

Ninja:OK, then the answer is -6n+15.

Spy:Um, that's not the correct answer.

Ninja:Yes it is!

Spy:Did you combine like terms?

Ninja:No

Spy:Then that's probably why you got the wrong answer! Here I'll show you.
First you have to put the variables together, for example the n, and the -5n.

Spy:Then you put the integers (constants) together, for example the 3, and the 12. Now your question should be like this. n-5n+3+12.

Ninja: Oh now I see what I did wrong.

Spy:Now you combine the n and the -5n, and that should give you -4n, because the n is positive, so you would be adding a positive to a negative 5.

Spy:Now you just add the 3 and the 12, and that should give you 15.

Ninja:Oh

Spy:Yeah, so you should get -4n+15.

Ninja:Now I get it! Thanks for the help

Spy:No problem, now I have to go..... save the world! But I will be back to ask that other math question!

Ninja:OK, bye!

Script#2

Spy:I'm back!

Ninja: Hi again!

Spy: I have your other question for you to answer.

Ninja: OK, bring it on!

Spy: 2+4(3n+8)

Ninja: I know the answer to that one!

Spy: Me too, it's 12n+10!

Ninja: HAHAHA no it's not! You didn't use the Distributive property, did you?

Spy:No.

Ninja: OK here's what you should have done. First of all you should just forget that the 2 is even there... put it in the back of your mind for a little while. Now you multiply the 4 and the 3n, and you should get...... 12n. Now you multiply the 4 and the 8, so that you get 32. You now bring back the 2 and combine it with the 32 to get 34. Since there is nothing to combine with the 12n, you just leave it alone. Finally, you have 12n+34... the RIGHT answer!

Spy: OK now I see what I did wrong.

Spy: you really are good at math!

Ninja: Yep, now I have to go to my secret ninja training.

Spy: I see I see, OK then bye!

Ninja: See you soon!

Today in class we learnt all about subtracting integers. Mr. Harbeck VERY clearly told us that INTEGERS DO NOT SUBTRACT, YOU ADD THE OPPOSITE (don't worry if you don't understand I will be explaining it in the methods.) Here are two methods that you can use to subtract integers.

METHOD #1- RE-WRITE THE QUESTION

INTEGERS DO NOT SUBTRACT, YOU ADD THE OPPOSITE.

For this method you have to re-write the question to make it easier on yourself. If the question says (+5)-(+3) you should replace the subtraction sign with an addition sign. That's the adding part. Now you replace the +3 with a -3. That's the THE OPPOSITE part. Then you just answer the addition question however you want. Now the question should look like this, (+5)+(-3)=(+2)

E.G. This is question #31 on page 46 (the yellow booklet).

That was one method of subtracting integers.

METHOD #2-DRAW INTEGER TILES

For this method you have to draw out the integer tiles (they can be circles too.) For example if the question says (-3)-(+3) you should draw out the first integer the same, and the second one should be a zero pair. Then you cross out the tiles that are the 2nd integer in the question. Then you just add up the remaining tiles and you have the answer! Here is a picture if you don't understand it yet....

E.G. This is question #20 on page 46 show as integer tiles. (the yellow booklet).

and this is the solution.
That was another method on how to subtract integers.
In class Mr. Harbeck also assigned page 46 in the yellow booklet for homework, and we got some time in class to do it.

Integer Adventure

Part one
Once upon a time there was a little green frog named Lily. Lily was the smallest frog in her family. She was always picked on by all of her older brothers and sisters, they always made her go and search for food because they were too lazy to do it themselves. Lily hated that.

One morning as Lily was looking for breakfast she spotted a snake following her. She was worried that it might start to chase her so she jumped a little faster. The snake started to slither a little faster, then faster, then it was chasing Lily! Lily hopped as fast as she could, trying to get away from the snake. As she was hopping Lily saw a tree right in front of her!

"Oh great what am I going to do now", she thought.

All of a sudden the tree started to talk! "I will move my branches if you can answer this integer question.....

"I know that one", she thought, thankful for the math lessons that her mother had taught her.
She wrote it out quickly on a nearby leaf, using money to show it.

"The answer is -4", she yelled proudly.

"OK I shall let you pass, and give you a short cut to help you get away from the snake."
"Thank you."

Lily kept hopping as fast as she could until she realised that the snake was no longer following her. She stopped to take in her surroundings and noticed that she was in an area that she didn't recognize. She was lost and she knew it. Lily started to cry.
"I know my siblings don't care about me but my parents do and they're probably worried sick about me right now. I have to get home, but where is home?"

"I know where your home is."

She whipped around only to find an ugly over sized toad sitting behind her.

"I can show you which direction to go, but only if you answer this integer question....

"That's easy", she thought as she showed it using a number line.

"Good job, and to get home you go to the East", he said.

So Lily hopped to the East as hard as she could, still passing unfamiliar things and sights, talking to unfamiliar people and just wishing that she could be home. Then Lily saw a sign.

Lily realized just then that the "short cut" that the tree had given her had taken her to an alternate universe! She was just about to freak out when she saw another sign.

Lily knew the answer to that one, so she put the answer on the paper that was beside the box using integer tiles.

She put her answer in the box and the ground started to shake, she started to spin, everything went blurry, then it was silent.

continued.....Part 2
Lily opened her eyes and looked around. She noticed some familiar sites and sounds and realized that she was very close to her house! So she hopped along in the direction of her house, but only got as far as the pond. In order to get to her house she had to cross the pond. Now you may be thinking that frogs are excellent swimmers, and they are, but Lily was an exception. She couldn't swim at all. She sat glumly for a few minutes by the pond until she spotted a series of lily pads going straight across the pond. The strange thing about them was that there was numbers on the pads. It looked like an integer question!

Lily knew the answer right away. She thought about it while she crossed the pond. In her head she re-wrote the question like this so it would make more sense...

After Lily crossed the pond, she saw her house, but something didn't look right. There was no one out side, and the house looked deserted. Lily went to the door and opened it slowly. Inside she saw the reason the house looked so deserted. Lily's parents and siblings were tied to chairs with gags over their mouths, and someone was robbing the house! Lily quickly sprang into action and jumped onto the thief, but she wasn't quick enough. The robber had her pinned down in a second.

"I will only let you and your family go if you can answer this integer question", he sneered.

Lily thought, and thought, and thought, but she just couldn't remember anything about adding and subtracting integers. Then, out of the corner of her eye she saw her mom trying to silently explain it to her. She understood just enough to figure out the answer, by re-writing the question so that it made more sense.

"No, you figured out the answer", he wailed as he left.

After that day, Lily's family treated her like a hero, and her brothers and sisters appreciated her. Lily was finally happy, and she never had to go and search for food ever again.
