Today in class we did the following: correct yesterday's homework, and subtracting mixed numbers. We are also reminded that the student led. portfolios are due. on Monday. Then we had homework (sheet Mr. Harbeck gave us).

Yesterday's homework: Question 1


There are two ways that you could subtract mixed numbers. This is the first way. First, we are going to change the mixed number to an improper fraction. To do that, the denominator stays the same as long as it's the common denominator. To find the numerator, you multiply the denominator (4) by the mixed whole number (36). After, you add the numerator (144+1). Do the same for 2 3/4. Then, you could subtract. After subtracting, you have to change the improper fraction (answer) to a mixed number. To do that, you divide. So it's 134 divided by 4. Which gives you the answer of 33 2/4 or 33 1/2.


The second way for subtracting mixed numbers is to borrow. You use this if the wholes are big, and when you don't want to multiply (if the number's too big for you). To use this, you write the mixed number a different way, but still having the same amount (eg. 36= 35 4/4). Add the whole with the fraction (35 4/4 + 1/4). Then, you could subtract. Which gives you the answer (33 2/4 or 33/ 1/2).

This is another question using way 2: borrowing.

Don't forget to do your homework (worksheet). And if you're not done your eportfolios, finish it . One more thing, the 2 minutes storyboard and script are also due on Monday.

In the assignment, we are suppose to discuss the Pythagorean theorem. Though, we are suppose to explain the artifacts and the vocabulary too. But, what I'm going to do is use the vocabulary on the text. To take it a different way, some of the vocabulary would be on the pictures.Then I would explain the links between the vocabulary and artifacts, to give it more meaning.






Pythagoras was born in the island of Samos in Ancient Greece. He lived in the 500's BC and was the first Greek mathematical thinkers. he lived in Sicily and Southern Italy. He had a group of followers called Pythagoreans. They lived simple lives. Pythagoreans were interested in philosophy. Especially in music and mathematics. To them, music is noise that make sense, and mathematics is rules for how the world works. Pythagoras is best known for proving that the Pythagorean theorem was true.



We are suppose to explain what the artifacts are. What I did is use the vocabulary with the artifacts.
Artifacts (formula will be used later):




Pythagoras used a formula to find c. He also used another formula to find A or B. His theorem is based on the fact that "The area of a square built upon the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares upon the remaining sides."

Here, I'm going to use Pythagoras formula to find c, and a.




The links between the vocabulary and the artifacts are pretty simple. As we all know, Pythagoras is Greek. He also came up with a theorem and formula, involving right angled triangles and squares. The theorem solves for legs (a or b) or c (hypotenuse). This would be easy if you know how to use it properly.


Here, using the Pythagorean theorem, I would solve two problems.
Problem: 1

The distance between A and B is 16 mm.

Pay it Forward

We were given an assignment that relates to the movie pay it forward. Students are suppose to do one act of kindness. Then answering the following questions.

1) Who are you going to help?

2) What are you going to do?

3) Where are you going to do this?

4) When are you going to do this?

For Pay it Forward, I'm going to help my parents and my brother. For my parents I will make them cofee and then attach a note on it that will make them smile. After, I'm going to help my brother do his math homework. I'm planning to do both at home. I will try to help my brother with his homework everyday.





Reflecting

1) What happened?

2) How did you feel?

3) How did the person/ people react?

4) Did you ask the person/ people involved to pay it forward? How did the person/ people react to this?

Pay it forward did work. I made my parents smile. Also I helped my brother finish his math homework. It felt really good making someone smile, and to help them with something.They acted really surprised, and happy at the same time. I asked my parents and my brother to pay it forward. And they said yes.


Can one person make a difference? Yes ofcourse! You just need to have an idea that could change the world and put it in to action. While doing what you need to do, you need to believe in yourself, have courage, persevere, and hope that it would work. And possibly something as big as pay it forward starts. Then you would wonder why? Well this is what I think about. When you help a person, it makes them feel better. Then they will have the courage to make someone feel better too.

Today we corrected our homework (green booklet pg. 5, 1-12). We spent almost half the class time on correcting it. Here on the scribe post I wouldn't bother with yesterdays homework. Instead I'm going to scribe about the multiplication rules. Then would scribe about Mel's Integer Theorem. Last but not least, the homework for today.

So, here we go. These are the multiplication rules/theorem. With positive and negative integers.
For the first one, the answer is negative. The next question however, you could use the previous question.Then just multiply the rest with the answer from the previous question. That was the pattern Mr. H was looking for. For me I did it a different way. It took longer, especially explaining it during class.

This is another multiplication rule/ theorem. Here it is only including negative integers.

For this theorem I have a formula using exponents. Here it is.





These formulas are just explaining Mel's Integer Theorem.

This is Mel's Integer Theorem.

When you multiply integers and there are an even amount of negative integers the product is positive.

When you multiply integers and there are an odd amount of negative integers the product is always negative.

Today's homework is to prove Mel's Integer Theorem. We are suppose to prove it by answering questions 13- 18, pg 5, green booklet. I would show 13 and 14 to you.

Darren Shan's Integer Adventure
Part 1

Once upon a time there was a half vampire named Darren Shan. He woke up one afternoon and he was very hungry, he needed to drink blood right away. So, he decided to go out to find a human to feed on. While on his way to the city he stumbled upon an enemy it was a vampaneze. A vampaneze is a creature who drinks blood and kills the one he feeded on. The vampaneze is on it's way to run and kill Debbie, Darren's friend. He caught up with the vampaneze but it's too late.

The vampaneze said " I will spare her life if you answer this question".

Here is the vampaneze question.






Darren answered the question right away, he love integers. Still, he was hungry. He started to faint. Luckily Evra Von his friend saw him.

Then Evra said, " If you answer my math homework I will give you some food".

Darren answered back "Anything that could get my energy back".

Here is Evra Von's math homework.






Darren regain some of his energy but, still not enough. So, he started sprinting.After time he slowed down. The food that Evra Von gave him was not enough and the energy was used already. Then he saw a faint shadow of a man. He waited and saw that it was his best friend Steve.

Darren started shouting " Steve help me! I'm going to die of starvation!".

Steve answered back "What? There is plenty of food you just have to buy some!".

"You idiot! Don't you know that I'm a vampire?".

"Oh, yeah I forgot about that".

" Here I'll help you for one condition help me answer an integer question".











Steve helped him. He ate human food. Darren needed to find a human to drink from fast. It is almost dawn. The sun will come up soon. If he didn't drink before the sun comes up he's going to get burnt. So, he hurried up to find a human. While on his search a vampet called "Hooky" came upon him. By the way Hooky is a bad guy. And Darren was very hungry and tired, he can't fight.

Before Darren could speak Hooky said "You needed human blood right?".

" If you answer a question I will spare your life and give you a human to feed from".

Here is the vampet's question.





Darren made it back before dawn. Thanks for his knowledge of integers. If he never knew how to solve integer questions he would die. And possibly get burnt by the sun. Also by the creatures who helped him feed on human blood.

Part 2

Over the next few years Darren has continuous supply of blood. But then he got called to be on a mission to find and kill the vampaneze lord. It will start a war so he has to kill him first before it kills anyone else. To get the job done right away, he started flitting (like sprinting but way faster). Then he got tired. On the way he saw a helicopter, it was piloted by his fellow vampire Vancha March.

Vancha said, " You need a ride?"

Darren said " Sure!"

" First you need to answer a question of mine"

Here is Vancha's question.


Darren answered Vancha's question using integer tiles.The answer is -8. It was very easy for him. He was really smart when he was a human, in fact he finished college at the age of 16. When Vancha dropped him off his targeted location he thanked him. Then he went down the tunnels (he was in the city). While walking he heard something. At the end of the tunnel he saw Hooky.
Hooky said " We meet again."

Darren answered back "Yup, do you know where the vampaneze lord is? If you don't tell me I'll kill you"

Hooky replied " Kill me? Don't waste your time. Just answer my really hard integer question!"

Here is Hooky's question.




Darren answered Hooky right away he solved the question by rewriting it in addition. Hooky was really mad but, he told him where the vampaneze lord is. After he needed Vancha's helicopter again but he was nowhere to be seen. So Darren flitted once again.

The characters on this story is based on a book called Cirque Du Freak. There is no intention to hurt or offend anyone.

Today in class we did the following
  1. Go over #10, #4, #13 on the work sheet: Which Italian Insects Often Fall in Love?
  2. We did another worksheet, but we didn't finish it in class so it's for homework.

Some people had some trouble doing question #10, #4, #13 so Mr. H showed us the solutions.

I'm going to show you how to solve number 10 letter A. If you spin the spinner 600 times, about how many times would you expect it to stop on: a. $1, b. $5, c. $10.

A) P= FO/ TPO

6/12 or 1/2 or 50% Fifty percent of 600 is 300 so 300 is the answer.

The second thing we did in class was the work sheet. I will show you 4 questions on the first page.

#8 A number from 9- 20 is drawn at a random. Express the probability as a percent.

P ( a number divisible by two)= FO/TPO, 6/12 or 1/2 or 50%

9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20 TPO

The answer is 50% percent

#10 You roll a number cube numbered from 1-6. Express the probability as a decimal.

#12 A jar contains 4 pink, 11 green, 19 blue, 6 violet marbles. A marble is drawn at a random. Express the probability as a percent. Round to the nearest percent.

#14 A jar contains 11 navy and 12 white marbles. A marble is drawn at a random. Express the probability as a decimal. Round to the nearest hundredth.

The answer is 0.52

On the other side of the sheet there is another set of questions I'm going to show you two of them.

#5 You flip a coin and toss a 1-6 number cube.

P (not tails)= FO/ TPO 1/2

P(not 3)= FO/ TPO 5/6

Then I multiply the two fractions together 5/6 x 1/ 2

6 x 2 is 12, 1 x 5 is 5 so it's 5/ 12

That's how I solve it. I know it is right but, I think Mr. H wants us to do a probability tree. Sadly I didn't, I took a shortcut.

#6 You roll a number cube numbered 1-6 You then spin a spinner with 4 sections each with a different color. The spinner has the colors pink, red, white, and gray.

P(2)= FO/ TPO 1/6

P (white)= FO/ TPO 1/4

Then I multiply the two fractions together 6 x 4 is 24, 1 x 1 is 1. So the answer is 1/24. Another shortcut.
